Excellence and its Pursuit in a World Obsessed with Quick Fixes and Social Media Success

The path of Excellence is hard but its rewards are sustainable success and peace of mind.                                                                                                                                     Which path will you choose?

CosmetiChroma

Last week I watched a video on social media about social media success. In today’s digital age, social media platforms are flooded with stories and bold claims of overnight success, quick fixes, and seemingly effortless achievements. While these narratives can be inspiring, they often overshadow the true essence of excellence and the really hard work it entails.  I assure you hard work with the right mindset does pay off … in the end. Let’s delve into what excellence entails and why it is a more sustainable and fulfilling path compared to the allure of quick fixes and the curated success seen on social media.

Excellence vs Quick Fixes and Social Media Success

Quick Fixes and Social Media Success

The Illusion of Social Media Success

Social media is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it provides a platform for individuals to share their achievements and inspire others. On the other hand, it can create unrealistic expectations and a distorted view of success. The highlight reels we see on platforms like Instagram, TikTok, etc often omit the struggles, failures, and perseverance that underpin real accomplishments. The curated nature of social media means that we often only see the end results, not the journey. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and the false belief that success should come easily and quickly. It’s important to remember that behind every “overnight success” story, there are usually years of hard work, dedication, and resilience.

The Pitfalls of Quick Fixes

In our fast-paced world, the temptation to seek quick fixes is ever-present. Whether it’s a fad diet promising rapid weight loss, a get-rich-quick scheme, or a shortcut to mastering a new skill, these solutions rarely deliver lasting results. Quick fixes often lead to temporary gains at best and disappointment or setbacks at worst. They undermine the value of hard work, dedication, and the incremental progress that leads to true mastery. Furthermore, an aspect of quick fixes is that there is no sense of a solid foundation, you get the feeling that you will fall, that nothing is there having your back.  This creates a sense of insecurity and the permanent fear that you could lose everything at any moment.  Quick fixes can therefore be detrimental to our mental and physical well-being. The allure of quick fixes can distract us from the more sustainable and rewarding path of gradual improvement and long-term success.

Excellence

CosmetiChromaCosmetiChroma’s Award for Italian Excellence

Recently, as some of you may have seen, the work I’ve been doing on CosmetiChroma has received recognition in terms of an award for “Italian Excellence” given by the Italian “Eccellenze Italiane“.  The distinguished logo of “Eccellenze Italiane” is officially registered in Italy and abroad by the Ministry of Economic Development, Patent and Trademark Office no. 0001647672 of 22 September 2015 and by the European Union certification body (EUIPO) no. 018476828.

How did I achieve this?

By adopting a path and mindset which fosters excellence.  Excellence is not a destination but a continuous journey. It requires a commitment to growth, learning, and improvement. It also means you need to be prepared to fail, make mistakes and to accept the level that you are currently at. This is extremely hard to do for someone who already does not have a good sense of self-worth as every failure is seen as an attack on existing, underlying feelings of adequacy.  This is especially true if self-worth is intrinsically linked to achieving.  The only solution is to have the courage to put aside the ego, feel the pain underneath including feel the fear and continue on the excellence path in spite of it.

The Path to Excellence

Here are some key principles which I embraced on the path to excellence and which I know elite sports people also adopt:
  1. Consistency Over Intensity: Small, consistent efforts over time yield better results than sporadic bursts of intense activity. Whether it’s practicing a skill, building a business, or improving your health, consistency is key. Consistency helps build habits, and habits are the foundation of excellence. By making small, daily efforts, you create a sustainable path to success.
  2. Embrace Failure: Failure is not the opposite of success; it’s a part of the journey. Each setback provides valuable lessons and opportunities for growth. Embrace failure as a stepping stone to excellence. When we view failure as a learning experience, we become more resilient and better equipped to handle future challenges. It’s through failure that we gain the insights and skills needed to achieve excellence.
  3. Focus on the Process: Instead of fixating on the end goal, concentrate on the process. Enjoy the journey, celebrate small victories, and stay committed to your daily efforts. The process is where growth happens. By focusing on the steps you need to take each day, you can make steady progress toward your goals. This means you have to enjoy the process and let go of the outcome.  Afterall, being attached to the outcome does not help you as it is not in your control. What is in your control, however, are the tiny steps you do each and every day, repeatedly – not glamorous I know but it underpins this path.
  4. Lifelong Learning: Excellence requires a mindset of continuous learning. Stay curious, seek feedback, and never stop improving. The pursuit of knowledge and skills is a lifelong endeavour – don’t make the mistake of thinking you can put your feet up. By embracing a growth mindset, you open yourself up to new opportunities and experiences. Lifelong learning keeps you adaptable and relevant in a constantly changing world.
  5. Authenticity: Be true to yourself and your values. Authenticity breeds excellence because it aligns your actions with your core beliefs and passions. Don’t be swayed by external pressures or the need to conform to social media trends. When you are authentic, you are more likely to find fulfillment and satisfaction in your pursuits. Authenticity also fosters genuine connections with others, which can support your journey to excellence.

The Role of Discipline and Patience

Discipline and patience are essential components of the pursuit of excellence. Discipline helps you stay focused and committed to your goals, even when the going gets tough and even when you don’t feel like it. It involves setting clear priorities, managing your time effectively, and maintaining a strong work ethic. Patience, on the other hand, allows you to stay the course and trust the process, even when progress seems slow – not one of my virtues! In a world that often values instant gratification, cultivating discipline and patience can be challenging. However, these qualities are crucial for achieving long-term success. By developing discipline and patience, you build the resilience needed to overcome obstacles and stay motivated on your journey to excellence.

Conclusion

In a world captivated by quick fixes and the illusion of instant success, the pursuit of excellence stands as a beacon of true achievement. It reminds us that real success is built on a foundation of hard work, perseverance, and authenticity. By embracing the principles of excellence, we can achieve lasting fulfillment and inspire others to do the same. Excellence is not about perfection; it’s about continuous improvement and striving to be the best version of yourself. It’s a journey that requires dedication, resilience, and a commitment to lifelong learning. While the path to excellence may be challenging, it is also deeply rewarding. By focusing on the process, embracing failure, and staying true to your values, you can achieve meaningful and lasting success.
